Tutorial for Hardware fold setting.
Setting the fold is important. It serves three purposes.
1. It makes the fold tidy as possible.
2. It sets the fibres of the leather to their new position. This ensures that the leather will not crackband split.
3. It makes sewing so much easier.
Setting folds applies to any leather used in harness making, generally one or more millimetres in thickness.
Leather thickness should always be reduced at the fold prior.
To carry out this procedure you must wet the leather sufficiently. This will loosening the fibres enough to gently fold the leather.
Once done, gently clamp, peg. or place a weight on the leather and leave to dry. The result is a Set Fold.
